First year A Level Business students took the train to Gatwick Airport on Tuesday to learn all about the business of running an international airport.
Gatwick staff volunteered their time to describe their work and explain how Gatwick functions as a business. Jacqueline Cave introduced the session by outlining some of the operational headlines and giving an insight into the different career paths available at Gatwick. Ex-Varndean student, Austen Symons, gave a fantastic insight into different elements of Gatwick’s business and his role as an economics analyst. Charlotte Walker spoke about the huge, complex investment programme that keeps Gatwick as arguably the busiest and most efficient single runway airport in the world. Steve Wirths, Head of Strategic Finance, finished with a quick overview of the airport’s profit and Loss (P&L) account and the interesting ownership structure of the business.
