Varndean Sixth Form College celebrates Green Careers Week

Varndean Sixth Form College celebrated Green Careers Week from 10th-14th November, with students encouraged to consider how the knowledge and skills gained from their courses could lead to planet-saving careers.

The first event of the week saw a large group of students, including many members of the Carbon Literacy enrichment, attending a talk from the Knepp Wildland Foundation. He gave a thorough overview of the rewilding project and the wide range of careers available, from livestock management to community engagement. Students were particularly interested to hear about the volunteering and work experience opportunities available.

Wednesday saw a visit from the Sussex Dolphin Project, with a fascinating introduction to the local cetaceans that can be spotted from our local beaches. The talk gave students a fascinating insight into career paths into conservation, stressing that a traditional scientific research background is not always necessary!

The week ended with a packed talk in conjunction with Politics Society by a Senior Specialist from The Environment Agency. He gave students a fascinating insight into how our local Environment Agency works to protect communities from flooding and the risks of climate change. The students were incredibly engaged and asked some fascinating questions about how water companies can be held to account over pollution. They were also able to learn about the fantastic Degree Apprenticeship scheme that they offer.
