As part of Varndean College’s commitment to climate education and our pledge to promote the embedding of carbon literacy into our curriculum, staff and students of A Level Textiles, Photography and Graphics recently undertook a collaborative and creative project, enabling multiple pieces of content to come together in one final outcome.
The theme of the project was sustainable clothing which involved A Level Textiles students making aprons and face masks using only sustainable materials, which were then photographed and edited by our A level Photography students. The Graphics students used their skills to design posters displays; the content of which was to raise awareness of current issues relating to being sustainable in all that we do. The successful collaborative project between these three subjects was then one of a number of Teaching and Learning Projects showcased at our annual Teaching & Learning Fair in January.
Programme Leader for Textiles, Helen Brewer, said “It has been such a valuable experience to collaborate on this project. Not only have we been able to embed the important issues surrounding sustainability into our visual arts schemes of work, but the students have responded so positively and creatively to exploring this theme. We are looking forward to continuing the development of sustainable methods of working in our classrooms and the wider college.”
Varndean College continues to promote education for sustainable development and this project demonstrates how students and staff from different disciplines can come together to engage with the issues of climate change. It also provides a forum in which students can empower themselves either individually or as a collective to take action on one of the most pressing issues of the 21st Century.
