Success at Brighton & Hove Citizens Assembly

Staff and students from Varndean College recently attended another successful Citizens UK event where hundreds gathered for one of the largest events of the local election season. Varndean College Principal, Donna-Marie Janson, College Vice-Principal (Student Services) Lisa Watkin-Stevens and Director of Student Engagement, George Marshall, addressed some pertinent issues affecting students across our city.

The two main political parties, The Green and Labour Party, were held accountable. Cllr Amanda Evens from Labour and the Green Party’s Cllr Mac Cafferty agreed to ensure better lighting and signage is installed in Hove and Preston Parks, that a Night-time Charter is developed in partnership with leaders and councillors in the hospitality industry so that safety is prioritised, and to ensure that funding is found to assist nearly 10,000 students across the city’s schools and colleges for specialist support to address mental health difficulties. A massive win as the Citizens UK alliance have been campaigning for over two years.
