Former Varndean Textiles student, Charlotte Farrant, wins Hand & Lock Prize!

Huge congratulations to former Varndean Sixth Form College Textiles student, Charlotte Farrant, who has won the ‘Student Fashion’ category in the Hand & Lock Prize!

Charlotte (formerly of Downlands Community College) studied A Level Textiles, A Level 3D Design and BTEC Environmental Sustainability at Varndean from 2020-2022 and went on to study Hand Embroidery at The Royal School of Needlework where she recently graduated.

For this year’s Hand & Lock Prize competition, applicants were asked to draw inspiration from heritage, tradition, and memory, explore the role of museums and cultural institutions as guardians of our collective stories; venture into the unseen world of archives and storage rooms to uncover hidden gems and create breath-taking works of art, and reflect on the value we place on different objects, comparing the aesthetics of popular and overlooked items.

Charlotte’s design took 741 hours to make with 14-16 hour long days and her former tutors, Gail Eastwood (pictured with Charlotte), Jill Hurst and Helen Brewer, could not be more proud.  Charlotte is now off to the Knit and Stitch Show at Harrogate next and has ideas about a new piece revisiting her previous war research.
